The HORNETS began the 2009 season with two pre-season games.  In June the HORNETS played the Newland Lions and won easily by logging a score of 64-0.  Their second preseason game was with the TriCounty Renegades.    The Renegades (Winston-Salem) claimed they were the best team in Piedmont North Carolina.  They were undefeated before playing the HORNETS.  The HORNETS dominated the game and came off their second win.  The score was 28-6.

As opening day came upon the HORNETS, the young HORNET squad remembered how they had not heeded the warnings of the veteran players in 2008.  Warnings that the Carolina Eagles would come prepared to crush the HORNETS should not be taken lightly. Playing in Concord, July 25 proved to be a great night for the HORNETS.  The HORNETS had come to play.  The HORNETS dominated the game.  Although the Carolina Eagles rallied late in the third and fourth quarters, their valiant effort was not enough.  The Eagles came up short.  The HORNETS won 30-29 over the Eagles.  With the HORNETS on a three game winning streak, they shut out the Carolina Gators 12-0 in their first home game.

The veterans warned that their next two games would be tough.  They would be playing the 2007 champion Greenville Seminoles (Greenville , SC) and the 2006 champion Iredell Warriors (Statesville).    Their warning fell on deaf ears.  The HORNETS lost to Iredell Warriors 26-10 and to the Greenville Seminoles 26-0.  As the rains moved into the area, the losses for the HORNETS increased.   On a rain soaked field in Rockingham, the HORNETS lost to the Rockingham Golden Bears 8-6.  Things did not turn around when the HORNETS hosted the Carolina Bulldogs.  The Hornets lost 13-0.

What appeared to be the makings of a terrible season has now begun the dramatic turnaround.    Players now come to practice, take on leadership roles and the overall demeanor of the team has changed.  The team SWARMED upon their next opponent.  On Sept 12 the HORNETS hosted 2008 Champions ( Rowan Rampage).  The HORNETS dominated the game and came off with a 22-13 win.  The following week had the HORNETS traveling to the Triangle Rattlers(Clayton). The HORNETS swarmed the field and walked away with a 18-8 win over the Rattlers.

Sept 26 has the HORNETS hosting the High Point Ravens for their last regular season home game.   This game has been rescheduled for the RAIN DATE October 10, 2009.
